Favorite albums of 2022

Now for this year’s favorite albums. Here we go:

1. CMAT – If My Wife New I’d Be Dead

Mid twenties British woman performing witty and self-deprecating country music. I absolutely love this whole album. Highlights: Like every song, but especially “Nashville“, “2 Wrecked 2 Care, “Groundhog Day“, “I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby!

2. Yard Act – The Overload

Hmm, I guess the two top spots are going to British artists. Snarky punk music… timeless. Highlights: “100% Endurance“, “The Overload“, “Rich

3. Soccer Mommy – Sometimes, Forever

Sophie Allison can probably just keep doing exactly what she’s doing and her songwriting and catchy melodies will keep her albums in my top 5 for years to come. Highlights: “Shotgun“, “Fire in the Driveway

4. Saba – Few Good Things

Just a fun and super solid hip-hop album. Really reminds me of Chance the Rapper’s Acid Rap from 2013 (which makes sense, since they’re from the same group of folks in Chicago, and was on that album’s song “Everybody’s Something” together). I think I can keep listening to this album through and never get bored. Hopefully Saba’s career will take him to the artistic places Chance could have gone. Highlights: “Survivor’s guilt” “Fearmonger” “If I Had a Dollar

5. Bob Vylan – Bob Vylan Presents the Price of Life

And we close out with another British artist. Or maybe I should say anti-British, since it’s gritty, anti-establishment grime / punk / hip-hop duo. Their song “Health is Wealth” definitely gave me Dead Prez “Be Healthy” vibes. Some highlights: “GDP“, “Take that

And that’s a wrap. Looking forward to more good new music in 2023.
